For more than sixty years after its first publication in 1765, The Christian Journal, John Brown of Haddington’s first published work for the public, remained immensely popular—leading to the production of numerous editions. Robert Mackenzie, in his biography of Brown, said, “as edition after edition was called for, the author was altering, adding to, amending, and sometimes not improving his pithy, pungent expressions.”—Indeed, even after his death in 1787, revisions and new editions of Brown’s Christian Journal continued to roll off the printing press for decades.
While no two editions were perfectly alike, The Christian Journal never lost its savour, or its ability to train the heart and mind to see with eyes of faith: to discern spiritual truths from the mundane. John Brown of Haddington has been a spiritual mentor for me since I was converted. His “Systematic Theology: A Compendious View of Natural and Revealed Religion” was the first real Reformed text on theology I read. Not long after that, I became aware of his “Christian Journal” but could never find a decent edition in print. It was something of a pipe dream of mine to see it republished one day, but I didn’t have high hopes it would be. I am beyond delighted that Grange Press has taken the time and effort to do so, and in such a fine edition. This is the kind of book you keep on your nightstand to get a continual dose of what it means to be spiritually minded and to be molded by that. Order this and read it — it’s well worth every penny.
