Is there a God? If so, which one?

your answer matters. it will matter for eternity.

The two most important questions you can ask are: Is there a God? and If so, which one? The wrong answers will lead to eternal misery, but the right ones will produce eternal happiness, if believed. Thankfully, you can know the answers to these questions with certainty, for God has given you reason, has filled the world with evidence of his existence, and, most of all, revealed himself through his word—the Bible. As this is important for your eternal well-being, let us discover the answers to these two big questions.

is there a god?

Atheism is a philosophy that says there is no God. However, if so, why do you exist? Atheists offer differing answers. Some say the universe is eternal, while others believe it sprang out of nothing or that it even came from a multiverse. Yet all these explanations break down logically, scientifically, and philosophically, which is why the Bible says: “The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God” (Ps. 14:1). That might sound like an insult, but it is stating a fact. Given the overwhelming evidence for God, one must ignore reason to be an atheist. Let us consider a few follow-up questions that will prove God’s existence.

What made everything? It is obvious that you exist, and it is equally obvious that the universe exists. But where did it come from? Many scientists suggest everything began with a “Big Bang.” But that raises another question: What caused the Big Bang? As you know, everything that exists has a cause—something that brought it into existence. The universe, therefore, must also have a cause. To get everything started, there must be an uncaused first cause.

The first cause is God. What is unique about God is that he alone is uncaused. He says of himself, “I AM THAT I AM” (Exodus 3:14). The eternal, uncreated God made everything: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Gen. 1:1). Since God, by definition, has no beginning or end, there can only be one such being. Only a single, uncaused cause can be the source of everything, which is what is known as “monotheism,” where the fact that there can only be one God is true.

Why does creation show design? From the majesty of the galaxies to the tiny, intricate details of DNA, and from the laws of physics that govern the universe to the laws of logic, the evidence of a Creator is overwhelming. The Bible says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork” (Ps. 19:1). Spend a night far from city lights and look at the heavens. The splendor of the cosmos will leave you in awe, which should lead you to think that the Creator must be more glorious than his creation, as the maker of something is superior to what he makes. The creation is like a sermon, preaching that God exists. The Bible says, “The invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse” (Rom. 1:20). In other words, the created world leaves no excuse for denying the Creator.

Where does morality come from? In every nation, you find a sense of morality. Though there is some variance, there is much agreement. Societies have laws against murder, theft, and perjury. Around the world, people say, “It is wrong to commit adultery.” Why? Because the Creator wrote his moral law into man’s heart and gave him a conscience to testify to right and wrong. When we break God’s moral law, what the Bible calls “sinning” (1 John 3:4), our conscience often troubles us. The Bible explains this shows “the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another” (Rom. 2:15). Because God exists, there is a standard of right and wrong.

Why do all people recognize a god? In a similar vein, wherever you go, people worship their gods and pray, which is no accident. Because of the testimonies God has given to his existence—both in the soul of man and in the created world—deep down, all people know there is a Supreme Being. And with that knowledge comes a sense that we owe worship, reverence, and allegiance to him, especially when we are in great danger or difficulty, for as the saying goes, “There are no atheists in foxholes.”

What is the point of life? Finally, consider the end of atheism: You die and cease to exist. There is no afterlife, no continued consciousness—just nothing. One must even ask if there is a point to life itself! All the achievements and memories of mankind would fade away. According to secular scientists, the universe will end in “heat death,” not with a bang but with a slow fade into cold emptiness. Atheism is a hopeless philosophy that leads to despair. It is not only untenable but also comes with serious consequences. If there is no God, consider what follows:

—There is no ultimate meaning in life.—

—No standard of right or wrong.—

—No hope beyond the grave.—

These realities not only paint a bleak picture but also contradict the evidence of what we know to be true. We can answer the big first question, “Is there a God?” with a confident “Yes.” Let us now consider the second big question:

which god?

It is not enough to believe that God exists. You must know who he is. There are many religions, but they make contradictory claims. Some say there are millions of gods. Others claim that everything is divine or that you can become a god.

Take Hinduism. It teaches all religious paths lead to God. However, Jesus said that no one can come to God except through him (John 14:6). Additionally, Hinduism teaches that all things are part of God.Therefore, you can worship everything. To be consistent, everything, including yourself, should be worshipped.

In contrast, Christianity maintains a sharp distinction between God and his creation. You are not divine. After all, you sin. Nor do you possess attributes unique to God, such as eternity and infinity. Instead, you had a beginning and are finite.

Based on the law of noncontradiction, both Christianity and Hinduism cannot be true. You can perform a similar exercise with other religions. Islam and Judaism teach unitarianism and that man is saved by works. Christianity, however, teaches that God is a Trinity, one God with three persons in the Godhead: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, with these three being the same in substance, equal in power and glory (1 John 5:7). Christianity also teaches that man is saved by grace alone (Ephesians 2:8–9). So, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity cannot all be right.

Why all these contradictions? It is, in part, the scheme of Satan, who desires to spread counterfeit religions in a futile attempt to diminish the glory of the true God. Thankfully, God has revealed himself to us.

The Bible reveals God to the world. In his kindness, God has revealed himself in the Bible and promised to preserve it for all ages. The Bible is composed of sixty-six books, making it a book of books. The qualities of the Bible demonstrate that it is unlike any other religious book. It is breathed out by the Holy Spirit, who is God. God inspired around forty men over 1,500 years to reveal himself to mankind.

In the Bible, God reveals who he is and what he requires of us. It shows how he works in creation and providence, which is how he governs the universe. He reveals himself as holy. He explains why death entered the world, why we experience sorrow, and why, no matter how much man seeks to improve himself, he still makes a mess of everything he touches. It is because all have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23). God reveals that because of sin, he must, out of his just nature, sentence sinners to an eternity of punishment. He delivered prophecies hundreds of years before their fulfillment, the greatest of which deal with the life, death, burial, and resurrection of his Son.

Jesus Christ reveals God to the world. God the Father wants us to know Jesus, the Son of God, who was sent in love to take on a human nature (yet without sin) to save sinners. God reveals how Jesus suffered and died in the place of sinners to atone for their sins. In the Bible, God reveals his love and compassion. He demonstrates his love for his people in this way: “God commendeth [demonstrates] his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8). On the cross where Jesus was crucified, you will find divine love in the death of God’s Son. Through Jesus Christ, you can know God because he is God. Christ came to give eternal life to sinners as a gift through faith in him. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Eph. 2:8–9). He did this so that his people, whom he loves, may live with him forever in heaven.

God offers this gift to you freely in his Son. In humility, open the Bible and pray the Holy Spirit will show you God through his Son. Believe on Jesus Christ and receive eternal life. “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name” (John 20:31). ❦
